Changing To Better Dog Food, Your Take On All This Would Be Helpful?
Okay we are looking into different dog foods now price and quality are what we are looking at. What do you think of these?
With all the prices please realize this is before the Tennesse sales tax, as you may know we have the highest sales tax in the country
1. Wellness Super 5 mix complete health Chicken dog food
I don’t like the fact that its $25.99 for 15 pounds…we normally get a 20 pound bag of food for around 17 dollars that lasts over 2 months (that was with Maxximum, but I want something without all the chemicals)
2. Blue Buffalo
Blue buffalo is 29.99 for a 15 pound bag so I’m not liking this one so much. due to the price
3. Diamond Naturals (they sell it at Tractor supply across the street) I like this one and the price is pretty good…15.99 for a 20 pound bag
4. Innova- I do really like Innova
Its 22 dollars for a 20 pound bag.
We have been on Maxximum Nutrition and it lasts us for a little over 2 months with our 2 dogs so I want something that will last just as long but not cost 30 dollars for a smaller bag then we are already getting.
Thanks

In addition to the prices, look at the recommended feeding amounts. They also have them on their websites.
With higher quality food, you often have to feed less of it than you would with a lesser quality food. So, the increase in price usually evens out.

I agree, beneful and all those brands are just horriable. Since you seem to be on a budget, go with dimaond naturals. They are a decent quality. (Not the best, but deff. better then pedigree and such)
I personally use innova EVO, pricey but you truely get what you pay for with dog food
Gotta Know: pedigree and iams are horriable. dont say that
I woudl stay away from
* NestlĂ© – Alpo, Come ‘N Get It, Mighty Dog, Chef’s Blend, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Kit ‘N Kaboodle, Deli-Cat, and NestlĂ© Purina products such as Dog Chow, Pro Plan, Beneful and Purina One
* Colgate-Palmolive – Hill’s Science Diet Pet Food
* Del Monte – 9-Lives, Kibbles `n Bits, Cycle, Gravy Train, Nature’s Recipe, and Reward
* Procter & Gamble – Eukanuba and Iams
* Mars – Pedigree, Advance, Cesar, Whiskas and Sheba
Another leading pet food, Nutro, is not a multinational company.*
with any of my animals. its fileld with fillers and chemicals, that you wouldnt eat or couldnt digest.
Innova EVO is a grain free diet with apples, carrots, TONS of protein, alfafa sprouts, chicken turkey. It has quality ingredients, which of course would cost more then low quality foods. In fact, studies have shown that your dog’s food may cause illnesses such as skin allergies, stomach problems, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
The whole point of marketing is to convince the consumer to purchase one product among a sea of similar products. Yet the image depicted by a company for their product is not always accurate. We are led to believe that our dogs are eating moist whole chicken, choice cuts of beef, fresh-picked grains, even chunks of real vegetables. Unfortunately, this is just an image.
Low quality ingredients, excessive chemical additives, and poor labeling standards all result in problems for your companion pet, from skin allergies to cancer.
The manufacturing processes of rendering and extruding may kill bacteria, but they do nothing to destroy the toxins produced by bacteria. Other toxins that are not necessarily removed during processing include:
* Hormones, such as those used to fatten livestock or increase milk production
* Insecticide from flea collars on euthanized companion pets and patches from livestock
* Condemned and contaminated material from slaughterhouses
* Sodium pentobarbital, the drug used to euthanize pets.
Even the grains used in pet food can be contaminated and may cause sickness and disease. Improper drying techniques or storage methods and low quality grains often result in the growth of mold or fungi. The toxins produced can cause vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, liver damage, lameness, or death.
Your on the right track, but if you can spend a little more its completely worth it.
Vet bills can be costly to ya know

Blue Buffalo is awesome and your going to have to come out the pocket anytime you have a dog. I don’t know what kind of Nutro you fed them but I have been feeding mine Nutro for years and always get asked what I’m feeding them because they are healthy looking and so is there coat.

You have made some really good choices there.
Keep in mind that you can get advice on the food, but all dogs are different my dog may do great on Wellness but yours may not. Canidae is also a more moderately priced dog food. Mine did great on it, but I know some who have not. Depends on the dog.
See if you can’t get some samples for a pet store to see which foods your dogs do well on.
As well the higher quality food you feed the less the dogs eat. You may be feeding a cup and a half of the cheap stuff but will only need to feed a cup of the good stuff.
Check the manufactures websites for coupons. The place that I buy my food from has a manufactures promotion where you buy 8 bags and the 9th is free.

Everything you mention is certainly better than what you were feeding your dogs, however, I changed to Canidae chicken and rice for my 5 dogs and any fosters I have over 2 years ago and it has made an enormous difference in their health – no more skin problems and no more ear infections.
I know it is more expensive than supermarket junk, but it is still far cheaper than vet bills. Think of it that way.
I highly recommend Canidae, you get it at feed stores and some smaller holistic pet supply stores.
Good kibble costs more without doubt because the cheap stuff is made mostly from corn meal – which is really cattle feed. Dogs need a dry that has meat as the first ingredient, no corn meal fillers or artificial preservatives – that is definitely more expensive, like comparing corn bread with meat.

Make it yourself or find a local dog food manufacturer. I haven’t bought dog food since the first dog food scare. We have three chihuahuas, which is a little easier making for them as opposed to larger dogs. I use 1 lb. ground chicken, 1 lb ground chuck, 2 cups shredded squash, 1 cup shredded carrots, 1 cup shredded apple, 1 cup regular oatmeal, 1/2 cup bread crumbs, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 2 eggs. made into meatballs, and baked for 20 Min’s @ 350 degrees. My meatballs are 1 tablespoon size. Each chihuahua has 2 meatballs with 1/2 slice of cheese daily. I supplement with 1 tablet of brewers yeast with garlic for healthy skin and coat. If you have a larger dog this may not work for you. It’s worth the extra labor and expense for our “family members.”

Perhaps you’d like to price Innova Evo? I don’t know the type and weight of your dogs, however it takes my two chihuahuas about 7 months to go through a 13.2# bag. I pay about $32.00 for that and that’s including 7% tax. My dogs eat about 1/4 cup per day or when they feel hungry as they don’t always eat every day. As you can see that comes out to be very thrifty even though the initial outlay is more.

I have never used any of these so I can’t say. My vet told me the Pedigree is a good food and so is Iams. I have a Border Collie/Sheltie mix that has never had any health problems. Both can be purchased at most stores and pet stores run sales (in my area) frequently on them.
