How Strenuous Is It To Be A Farmer? Is It As Labor Intensive As Working In A Stockroom?

How strenuous is it to be a farmer? Is it as labor intensive as working in a stockroom? By farmer, I mean the kind of farmer that grows things–and also without the use of tractors or any other machinery–I’m talking about old school farming.
Thanks.

In the Dakotas and elsewhere there is a distinction between farmers, ranchers and farmer ranchers. Farming is a gentlemans sport compared to ranching and doing both is a death wish, you gotta be born to it these days and you have to love it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a chicken or a thousand head of cows, one acre or ten thousand it’s a lot of damn work, and you’ll make just as much money stocking shelves. RScott

….Get a hold of yourself. Farming is the hardest thing to do. How are u going to sustain yourself while the crops are growing. You need a strong ox to plow the field. You need a healthy cow to supply you with milk. You need grain for the cow. You need chickens to sustain you. Above all you must deal with pestilence and the elements to proliferate your crops.
    Good luck and happy farming.

What you are describing is backbreaking labor, tilling the soil, planting and cultivating, all by hand. Also there are fence posts to cut, and then dig holes to set them; plus lots of other things to take care of–which is why we have modern convienences like pickups, tractors and electricity to help out.

Its hard work and it is very stressfull. your hot all day long sweating dirt and dust in your face and eyes dirt under your finger nails.spraying pesticides that could kill you if you breath them in. flies biting you nats flying into your eyes. You are never sure about the money you are going to make neither. your money depends completely on the weather and the government. farmers usualy use machinery but it is still one of the most backbreaking stressfull jobs there is. Thats why you will never meet a weak farmer.

do not even think about it. not in todays world

Farmers work from sun up to sun down. They work in harsh weather conditions and all day long without all the breaks you would get in a stock room.

It doesn’t get much more strenuous than farming. You would not be able to make a profit without the use of machinery.

Farming is probably one of the most physically taxing jobs/careers you could ever choose. Work is from sunup until sundown and your entire livlihood depends on the weather. The heavy backbreaking lifting is a killer too. It’s not for the faint of heart.

I have to agree with everyone of the answers you have so far, farming is HARD work. I work for a farmer {5000 acres in crops} who uses modern equipment for the job and we still bust butt from late spring till harvest is done, this year it looks like we will be done around Dec. 15!! The weather is also a huge factor, it can be your best friend or your worst enemy. You might also want to make friends with a chiropractor, you`ll need one.

well it does take quite alot of labour input to get started but after that probably not. Depends on what your used to and how much effort you put in. There forking and ploughing with hand tools, plus carrying sleepers or logs for borders, digging around in the soil in the sun, planting out, watering, weeding can definately be hard work, general maintainence. Im not sure what you mean by stock room but i would imagine it is less so.
