    It depends on how sterile…
There is a product available called Sahara. It is just like the name.
It will kill EVERYTHING for 9-12 months. Usually it is used along railroad tracks or construction sites. If you seek long term control this is the product for you.
If you seek short term 3-6 weeks use round up.

To sterilize it and kill the weed seeds you would have to cover it with clear plastic for a few weeks. Then you would want to till it and repeat the process. This doesn’t sound practical for an acre. It is impossible to get rid of weed seeds forever as they blow in the wind. About all you can do is kill what is there now, plant the grass seed and in the early spring put down a preemergent to prevent weeds. For killing the weeds, you can buy Honcho in huge containers, way cheaper than Roundup. You will have to go to a farm supply store to get it – not Lowe’s.

Use any non selective herbacide that has a high rate of glysophate (main ingredient in round up) atleast 41% that will kill anything it touches and the residual ( time before you can plant) is usually only 48 hours.

Round up, I hate to use all of those chemicals but it will definitely get rid of what you have.
